                                  Cause of fire

The Sinai fire tragedy in which approximately 110 people died and hundreds of others hospitalized with high degree burns, was caused by a leaking oil pipe. The exact death toll remains uncertain due to some bodies being badly charred or lost in the murky waters of a nearby river.A leak from the pipeline, which sent rivers of super petrol flooding through storm drains into a slum, was all due to a broken gasket. The rivers of petrol exploded into flames, resulting in one of the worst fire disasters in the country.

                               Current state of the victims

After the tragic fire people were displaced from their homes. With most of their property destroyed, they were forced to seek shelter in social halls and churches. Two years on,some of the victims are still homeless. Most of the survivors have not settled their hospital bills due to lack of insurance.A number of children no longer go to school. We have also encountered cases where children are forced to take care of older family members who fell victims to the fire. These victims can not find any form of employment due to poor health, therefore they mainly depend on small donations from the general public.

                                Mission of this charity

Two words:- Self-sufficiency  - Our main mission is to ensure that in two years, the victims of this tragedy, and other people who live in Sinai slum are able to provide for themselves easily without having to rely on outside help.Lets face it, you can not spend the rest of your life begging for help from other people. The main problem facing people who live in this slum is lack of food. Most of these families survive on less than a dollar per day. Lack of food causes malnutrition and other deficiency diseases. The first step was to make sure that these people had a constant supply of food.So instead of "giving them fish to eat", we decided to "teach them how catch fish". We cleared  dumping sites and converted them into a small areas for growing crops. We donated these farms to a sample of 30 families, brought in professionals to teach them about farming, purchased some farming equipment and gave them vegetable seeds to plant. We also donated chicks and rabbits for families who were interested in livestock keeping. This would in future provide income from the selling of meat and eggs and vegetables. It would also serve as a source of protein and vitamins.

After one year, we have seen a substantial positive change in the standard of living of these 30 sample families.
  • Due to the farming, they have had a steady supply of quality food for the last 1 year.
  • Some have opened small businesses by selling some of their farm produce to retail shops and in the market. These people now do not have to worry about employment because they are earning a steady income from the sale of the vegetables, eggs and meat from the rabbits.
  • A number of families are getting better housing due to the income derived from the agri-businesses.
  • We have estimated that in two years’ time, these   families will be fully self-sufficient.

This was only a sample of 30 families.Since we have proven that this concept works, many other families are interested and we need your help to realize our goal; which is to make sure that all families living in Sinai slum become self-sufficient.

This is our plan
  • We will give first priority to the people who were affected by the fire, either by loosing property,or getting injured by the fire.
  • We will then deal with the single-mothers who have large families to provide for.
  • We would use the money to rent land for those who are interested in growing vegetables. We have estimated that if we rent land for them for a period of two years, they will have earned enough income to rent land for themselves and continue farming on their own without any help.
  • In addition to renting land, we would also like to buy tractors and water pumps. These will be shared by 10-20 families.
  • We also would to construct livestock houses for those who wish to become chicken and rabbit farmers. We normally purchase these livestock from farmers in other parts of the country and donate them to first-time farmers.
Lastly, apart encouraging these farming ventures, we are also providing education to the boys and girls who cannot afford to pay for their education.

Our goal is to ensure that the families living in Sinai slum become self-sufficient two years after we induct them in our program. In doing so, we need your help.Whatever you have,no matter how big or how small,it all counts.Click below to help our cause. You will also get our contact details in case you have any suggestions or further questions.Thank you.
